What is the new law on fire doors in the UK?The Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 require regular checks to ensure that self-closing devices are working and the fire doors including flat entrance doors are in efficient working order and in good repair. These checks are to ensure that the existing door standard is maintained.

How often should fire doors be checked in the UK?Fire doors should be checked at least once every six months. If the door is in a high-traffic area or used frequently then they should be checked more regularly e.g. once a week/month as signs of wear will appear more quickly with increased use.

Do fire doors need intumescent strips at the bottom?It is generally accepted that to provide the required level of fire resistance, all fire doors should be reinforced with either intumescent strips, cold smoke seals or a combination of both. According to the British Standard 476 fire safety standards, most doors need to be S-type (smoke sealed) doors.

What should not be used on a fire door?This can damage it and make it less likely to work properly in an emergency. Don't drill into your fire door or cut it in any way. Don't paint over the seals on a fire door. Replace the handles, hinges or any hardware. Always have repairs carried out by a qualified individual.

Do fire doors need signs on both sides?Fire door signs are typically required to be placed on both sides of a fire door for visibility and safety purposes.

How do you know if a doors needs fire rating?Understanding the basics of fire-rated door labels These labels might be painted over, so be sure to check for any raised surfaces. If these labels are not found, the door is most likely not fire rated (but always reach out to an AHJ for clarification). If a credible label is there, then it is a fire-rated door.
